‘I poured the bowl of yogurt over my toddler’s head’

And suddenly you’re so tired of the whining and sucking, whining and dawdling that you go all out and pour the yogurt over his toddler’s head.

Evelien (36), mother of Pip (8) and Sara (5):

“Oh, that cursed morning rush hour. We were late, it was raining and I couldn’t find the keys anywhere. Sara is a lazy ass and packed her things painfully slowly. Then she refused to take a single step towards the door. I threw her backpack at her and yelled at her for %$#* to stay home alone.

I slammed the front door behind me with a bang, dragging Pip with me. After three minutes I had cooled down a bit and walked back. Sara stood calmly in the same spot where I had left her. She didn’t care that I left without her.”

Bowl of yogurt

Olaf (37), father of Olivier (5):

“Eating has always been difficult. Olivier’s oral motor skills are poor and he cannot swallow properly. It takes a lot of effort to keep him somewhat fed. A while ago the ‘I can’t eat’ turned into ‘I don’t want to eat’. And I had a lot less patience with that. One morning, out of sheer frustration, I poured a bowl of yogurt over his head. He got so angry he refused to take another bite.”

Your fault

Maartje (35), mother of Jacob (4):

“I was just packing his overnight bag when Jacob started whining about a missing puzzle piece, that he wanted a lollipop and that he insisted on his flip-flops in the dead of winter. I sighed deeply, put him on the back of the bike and brought him to my parents. That’s quite a long bike ride and then it’s no fun if you discover halfway through that you forgot your son’s medicines.

“Swearing and ranting, I cycled back home, while he stared blankly ahead”

I blamed him completely wrongly. After all, he had distracted me with his squeaks. Cursing and ranting, I cycled back home, while Jacob stared blankly ahead. It must have looked crazy to passers-by.”
