‘I don’t want my child to go to the plus class’

Sometimes you can’t figure it out on your own and you could use some advice. That is why every Tuesday a reader talks about her dilemma.

Janneke (37) is a single mother of Fenna (10) and Mika (7).

“Learning is easy for my daughter Fenna. Great, and she likes school, so everyone happy, you would say. Everyone except the teacher, at least. Because he thinks that Fenna needs more of a challenge, and wants to put her in the plus class, one morning a week. Otherwise she would get bored. I don’t see any signs of that; Fenna already enriches herself with piano lessons at home, she reads a lot and we philosophize a bit together during dinner.

plus class

Fenna doesn’t like the plus class at all. Because that means being taken out of class for half a day every week, to ‘be different’ with ‘other children who are different’, as she puts it herself. She just wants to stay with her friends in class, much more fun.

At school I have indicated several times what Fenna and I think about it, but the teacher keeps insisting. Like I don’t realize how intelligent she is, and hinder my daughter’s development. The opposite is true. After primary school she will automatically be placed in a class with children with the same intelligence as her, for now I think it is more important that she also continues to develop social-emotionally and does not feel that she has to do things that are not necessarily necessary.

Doubt

I am quite sure that Fenna will not be short of anything, but as a single mother sometimes a voice in my head sounds, when it is dark at night and I have no partner to consult with: am I doing the right thing by looking carefully at to watch and listen to my daughter, ignoring the teacher’s advice?”
