You are a momfluencer: how did that come about?

“I started Instagram six years ago. At first I mainly shared about healthy eating, but when I got pregnant with Yentl, I mainly focused on motherhood. The first photo with the three of us was picked up by a large baby store and that’s when the ball started rolling. We are now being asked for photo shoots and interviews, very bizarre. I’m anything but a well-known Dutch person, but when I’m recognized on the street, it sometimes feels that way. I used to often look at the number of followers – I wanted ten thousand – but now I’m not so concerned with that. I love that someone follows me for who I am and what I do. That gives me energy.”

What characterizes you as a mother?

“I always make it fun, wherever we are. That’s something I learned from home: when I came home from school, my mother was ready with tea and biscuits. I try to do the same for my daughters, for example with a serving board full of fruit and tomatoes or a girls night with candles lit. My kids come first and I drop everything to make sure they have a great day. That is sometimes difficult, because that means I am always behind the facts. Recently I wanted to clean up the house on Sunday, but the weather was nice and the children wanted to go outside, so we did that. When it comes to education, I have multiple sides. I can be strict – this is how my daughters should always be polite and tidy up their own things – but at the same time I’m very easy going. In a toy store I say no three times and in the end I don’t have a backbone.”

What is the biggest challenge of motherhood for you?

“Dividing my attention. My daughters have different needs due to their age. And they both demand their attention. If I cuddle with one, the other wants too, but not at the same time. That’s why I try to have one-on-one time with them. On Tuesday I am free and I do something fun with Loua. Yentl and I go to the Efteling together once in a while. What I also find difficult is the lack of me-time. Ricardo has a busy job as a chef and is often away during rush hours. Sometimes I long for the time when I could sit still and wake up without hearing, ‘Mommy, I need to pee.’”

What do you like most about being a mother?

“The love I get from my children. Sometimes I can stick them behind the wallpaper, but that does not outweigh the beautiful moments. I think it’s so special that two little people need you and trust you completely. Since seeing life through the eyes of my daughters, I have come to appreciate the little things more. I always pull out all the stops to make it cozy, but that’s not necessary at all. Yentl recently said: ‘Mom, we don’t necessarily have to do something fun, we can also play nice at home’. That was really an eye opener. We look forward to our coffee moment every day, a real tradition. Then I make a babyccino for my daughters.”

You also share vulnerable moments on Instagram. Why?

“If I can help just one person by telling my story, that’s enough. I don’t share it to be pitiful, but I want to break taboos. I used to have a complicated relationship with food and exercise. In the beginning of my relationship with Ricardo, I put on quite a bit of weight. I lost weight and stayed at a healthy weight for a while. But when it failed to get pregnant right away, PCOS was diagnosed. I took the advice to pay more attention to my diet very seriously. I quickly lost my mind: I no longer went to the gym three times a week, but seven times a week. For two to three hours. After a year and a half of trying, I got pregnant with Yentl. Even with her in my stomach, I only weighed 54 pounds. A vacation in Italy – in which Yentl ended up in hospital with the sixth disease and my mother went into cardiac arrest – was a tipping point. Fortunately, I came out stronger with professional help. Because of what I’ve been through, I’m extra attentive to my daughters. The other day Yentl said that candy makes you fat. Well, that makes my neck hairs stand on end. They are certainly not allowed to snack all day long, but I don’t bother with something tasty.”

Do you ever have to deal with unpleasant reactions?

PostViews:

“No, I haven’t been bothered by mom shaming so far – just knock on the door. I find it terrible to sometimes read such nasty reactions from other influencers. Of course I sometimes think: I would approach that completely differently, but who am I to say anything about that? Show everyone their value and be a little nicer to each other.”
