‘I don’t beat my children’

Steven Brunswijk is under fire after he told his children to ‘pump to tears’ while frolicking. The comedian responds to Kekmama.nl: “Anyone who knows me knows what I mean.”
The reason for the fuss is an interview that Steven gave to Female friend. In it he talks candidly about the Surinamese upbringing he received. With a heavy hand. “I was terrified of my mother’s beatings. I was beaten with soda bottles, with slatted frames, with all sorts of things.”
He decides to do it completely differently himself. “I don’t beat my children. Because of my own upbringing, I know how traumatic raising a voice can be. I have Parenting First Aid looked, The Nanny... such a time-out on the stairs works fine.” Only when it comes to frolicking, it sometimes gets hard in Huize Brunswijk.

He says: “I do that very consciously. If they have a fight at school, it’s not that big of a deal. I go quite far, especially with my son. I punch him pretty hard, but I can see he can take harder and harder punches. It makes him strong and hard.”
“I sometimes also push my youngest daughter to cry.” But, of course, “not that the bruise gets.” “Recently I was playing with my son and he bumped into a cupboard with his hip. And howl! That really hurt. Then I hug him. But while frolic, just howling, that’s just possible, you know.”
“I only frolic for love.”
Critics
On social media it rains criticism on the frolic quotes, such as ‘I hope Safe Home reads along’ and ‘Can this man be placed under supervision’. The comment does not affect him, he tells KekMama.nl. “Anyone who knows me a little knows what I mean by this. Namely: that if you play around with your children it can sometimes get out of hand. Is it going just a little harder than intended.”
He continues: “The people who don’t understand that probably never play with their children themselves. I also only frolic out of love, my own father, for example, didn’t do that. The kids just love it too, can’t wait for the next time.”
