…there was suddenly a sequel to my favorite series Sex and the City

‘Why hadn’t I heard of this?’ was my first reproach to the world. me, that The Shoebox (for those not in the know: that was the DVD box that contained all the episodes) as a relic in my student house. Who lost many a CD and book to an ex or girlfriend, but always left Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda in my student room…

they were my to go to from 1998 to 2004. After that, two more films appeared in which the critics took the lead, even though the first scene had yet to be shot.

Yes, here is a fan speaking. In the first movie, Mr. Big a dick and ended it with a marriage. In my opinion exactly the way a movie should be. Only even better, because my best friends played the leading role.

In 2010 the second film came out: I couldn’t believe my luck! By now I had three Mr. Big’s worn out and I had saved enough money to buy a decent pair of pumps. And now, twelve years later, during a pandemic and a terrible war, my friends knocked on my door quite unexpectedly. As if they sensed that I needed them.

However, they came to me in an all-destroying review: although they had been back, the makers would try too hard to tick the diversity box with the ‘black Charlotte’ and a non-binary person. ‘Too exaggerated’, it echoed in criticsland. In addition, the main characters would still be too white and it would be too much for them.

Well, I can tell you I cried the first two episodes as much as I did in a whole year. My husband was sitting next to me on the couch watching football and asked in surprise: ‘Are you looking forward to it? Sex and the City watching?’ Sobbing I agreed. “What could be so bad that you’re already crying?”

Good. So it was really great to see the cast again. For example, Brady Hobbes is a big teenager who only has sex with his girlfriend. Charlotte and Harry’s daughters struggle with their existential questions and Anthony and Stanford have changed the least in appearance. Samantha is unfortunately missing in the sequelbut still finds her invisible way in this sequel.

Because of all the criticism that the new, but also the old series gets, I wondered if Sex and the City in the 1990s really contributed too little to a possible social role…

In my view, they certainly broke a lance at the time: the series was groundbreaking about women and sex. We were also allowed to openly feel, find and try everything. Something that was mainly reserved for men. They showed that you could go for a career and three out of four women were financially independent. In addition, the series embraced the gay community in all its forms, from a same-sex marriage to Carrie’s boyfriend who was bisexual.
