Huawei faces espionage charges again. The Chinese firm has reportedly asked to install a backdoor in a security system in a city in Pakistan.
New accusations of espionage come to impact the news of the Chinese manufacturer. According to software publisher Business Efficiency Solutions, it installed a backdoor in a city-wide security system. The Wall Street Journal even reports that a complaint has been filed with a US federal court. At the time of writing, there is still a lack of concrete evidence to support these accusations against Huawei.
These new accusations further weaken Huawei’s reputation
The city of Lahore in Pakistan launched a call for tenders in 2016 for a safe city project. This was won by Huawei at the expense of Nokia and Motorola. The Chinese company has deployed a video surveillance system with facial recognition technology. To develop this, the firm also called on an American company named BES for, Business Efficiency Solutions. In the meantime, relations have refreshed, with the outcome of numerous lawsuits. During one of them, the American company revealed that the company requested the installation of a backdoor in the security system.
This is not the first time that the Chinese firm has faced such accusations. US sanctions are based on evidence of espionage. An embargo ensued which caused Huawei’s downfall in the global mobile telephony market. The reputation of the manufacturer is already well tarnished by these various events. The accusations made by BES are sorely lacking in evidence. According to the Lahore authorities, there is no evidence of a possible backdoor placed in the security system. Bad news as the Chinese manufacturer tries to return to the forefront with HarmonyOS.
