How do you take pictures of the rugged Motorola defy smartphone?

Welcome to our old well-known series, in which we introduce individual smartphones and talk about the quality of their cameras. We are more satisfied with some of them, a little less with others. The recently tested new Motorola defy is a rugged mobile phone. However, the price for high durability is generally worse hardware equipment.

The cameras of this model lag behind, but in some cases they can take a solid shot. You can read more details about the set of cameras in the review of this smartphone itself, or in the continuation of the article. So let’s describe the sensors of this tested, durable smartphone.

Cameras: Three sensors on the back, with only one of them usable in practice

As always, I’ll start with paper specifications. The Motorola Defy has three cameras on its back. The primary one is characterized by a resolution of 48 MP and a brightness of f / 1.8. The second sensor has a 2 MP resolution, an aperture of f / 2.4 and is used to measure the depth of field and consequently better background blur when using portrait mode. The macro sensor has the same resolution and the same aperture number. The front “selfie” sensor has 8 MP and a brightness of f / 2.2. Its qualities do not attract much interest, but on the contrary, it does not disappoint.

In practice, these are very below-average cameras. I haven’t tested a worse photographing phone for a long time. Well, that’s not his primary purpose, but I think people who want a cell phone outside would like to take some photos or video. Photos are underexposed with faded colors.

On the other hand, they maintain a good dynamic range. In good lighting conditions, the primary sensor produces usable images, but in the dark it is very miserable. You probably won’t use a macro camera, but it does its job, albeit in the most sufficient way.

Better is a video that doesn’t look so bad. However, you can only shoot it in 1080p at a frame rate of 30 fps. In the photo application, you will also find the option to turn on the mode with increased stabilization of the recorded image, but in addition to higher stabilization, you will also achieve worse focus and an overall darker image, which sometimes may not be useful.
