The Chinese manufacturer Oppo has presented a very special front camera that cannot be seen in everyday life. Although it is placed under the display, it should allow really good selfies, says Oppo. A suitable smartphone has not yet been presented.

Update from August 5, 2021: Shortly after the manufacturer’s announcement, there is already a first Hands-on video of the prototype. According to the video, the camera should actually be invisible in everyday life – regardless of the viewing angle, the light scattering and the actual colors of the display. When taking pictures, the preview should be a bit muddy, but this is not the case with the end result (source: Weibo).

Oppo: Invisible camera for good selfies

After other manufacturers, Oppo is now jumping on the bandwagon of front cameras that are invisible in everyday life. To this end, one would like to rely on new technologies for the user no compromises in terms of image quality to have to do. In addition, the sub-display camera should be seamlessly integrated into the screen and thus actually appear invisible.

In contrast to previous solutions, Oppo claims that it has managed to create a translucent area in the display with a Pixel density of 400 ppi to create. There is no difference to the rest of the display. Transparent cabling is also used. For a stronger brightness, the pixels are controlled individually (source: Oppo).

So far Oppo’s new and invisible front camera is just one advanced prototype. The manufacturer has not yet presented a suitable cell phone. Information on a possible use in upcoming Oppo cell phones was also not given.

Oppo also has a short teaser for the under-display cameraVideo released:

Other smartphone manufacturers are also working on the technology

Next to Oppo are still working other smartphone manufacturers on sub-display cameras. However, the results of the ZTE Axon 20 5G were not convincing – on the contrary, the selfies fell through with testers. Another solution should be presented in a few days with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3. A special selfie camera can also be expected with the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4, but the manufacturer can probably pay for it well.
