How do you prepare your child for summer time?

In the night from Saturday to Sunday, the clocks go forward one hour. That hour doesn’t seem like much, but some adults and children do suffer from it for a while: about 10 percent of people even feel jet lagged for a week. Fortunately, you can prepare children a little bit for summer time.

A few helpful tips.

1. Sleep fifteen minutes earlier

Move your child’s bedtime a little each day from today. Put your child to bed fifteen minutes earlier tonight and set the alarm a little earlier. As a result, your child’s biorhythms will synchronize more quickly with summer time. Still difficult to get up in the morning? A little exercise in the form of cycling or walking will help.

2. Positive spin

If your child is a little older, it may be a little more difficult to get him to bed earlier. Give it a positive spin: explain that the light will increase by an hour, but that it will allow him to sleep an hour less next Sunday.

3. Darkroom

Make sure that it is nice and dark in your child’s room at night: the curtains are closed, the hallway lights are off and at most a table lamp is on.

4. Going outside

Sufficient daylight can shift our biorhythm. People who are outside for an average of two hours or more go to sleep an hour earlier on average. Well worth a try this Sunday and that fresh air is healthy too.

Funny to know: about 15 percent of people are morning people. A larger group of 25 percent calls themselves an evening person. Evening people are particularly bothered by the summer time: after all, they have shorter sleep and even though it is already an hour later, it still feels early. If you also fall under the latter group, going to sleep an hour earlier is not such a crazy idea ;-).
