How bad is the iPhone SE 2022 for the environment?

Apple has a clear mission. By 2030, the company must be completely climate neutral. This means that products sold must not have a negative impact on the climate. The company is already well on its way by using more sustainable energy sources, for example, but the products also need to be greener.
So it’s an interesting moment to see how the new iPhone SE scores in that area. This device combines the hardware of an iPhone 13 with the looks of an iPhone 8 and has recently been available in the Netherlands for a suggested retail price of 529 euros.
The sustainability report shows that the iPhone SE 2022 is more durable than its predecessor. For example, the new model, the third generation, has a vibration motor (Taptic Engine) made from 100 percent recycled material. The packaging is also more sustainable because of the recycled wood and less plastic is used.
All in all, this ensures that the ecological footprint of the iPhone SE 2022 is smaller than its predecessor, see also the table below.

In fact, the iPhone SE 3 is the most sustainable iPhone to date with its CO2 emissions of 46KG. Previously, this title went to its predecessor, the second-generation iPhone SE that appeared in 2020. The most polluting iPhone in history is the iPhone 11 Pro Max. This model has an average CO2 emission of no less than 101KG.
