Honor Magic 5 Pro in the camera test: laurels justified?

With the Honor Magic 5 Pro, the smartphone manufacturer split off from Huawei wants to make a lasting impression. Above all, the camera should score. Is that true? We clarify that for you in the video.

Honor Magic 5 Pro: The camera specs

That was a surprise: when the Honor Magic 5 Pro was announced, it came with an award in tow. The experts from DxOMark gave it a new top mark, so first place in the smartphone leaderboard is secured for now. Now we had a few weeks to take a closer look at the camera.

On the back, three camera modules are hidden under the “Gaudi Curve” elevation. A main camera with wide-angle optics, an ultra-wide-angle camera, and a telephoto lens with 3.5x magnification. All three camera sensors have a resolution of 50 megapixels each.

And with that, we would also classify these specs as “reasonable”. There is no 200 MP sensor, the advantages of which are manageable – at least for the time being – or a 10x telephoto camera that is rarely needed in everyday life. Instead, a camera system that makes sense when you look at the specifications.

The Honor Magic 5 Pro consistently cuts a fine figure in daylight. Details are clearly visible in the recordings. However, the color representation is more “colorful” than realistic. It’s a matter of taste whether you prefer a more neutral color representation. In addition, the ultra wide-angle optics and the 3.5x optical zoom are also convincing. It rarely happens that a photo with the Honor fails in good lighting conditions.

Night shots look darker than we last shot them with the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. Nevertheless, the Honor easily manages to find enough lighting for a subject from a little moonlight.

But by no means all photos succeed. The Honor shows weaknesses in a cozy, dim lighting mood, details are lost in such situations. The Pixel 7 Pro used for comparison does a much better job with the lighting, among other things by increasing the exposure time a bit here. You had to wait about two seconds for the pixel, but the result is much more detailed.

We have put together more photo and video examples for you in the test video at the top of the article.
