‘Hassle strategy’: MongoDB will delete data from its Russian customers

The American company MongoDB, which specializes in “NoSQL” database systems, will simply erase the data of its Russian and Belarusian customers. These sanctions against Russia have not only become absurd, but they will set a precedent that will leave their mark…

MongoDB offers database solutions in the “cloud”. Used by big companies like eBay, Adobe, Toyota, but also lots of start-ups and SMEs, an American company has just sent a strange missive to its Russian and Belarusian customers. In the wake of the sanctions taken against these countries, MongoDB will simply erase the accounts of these nationals, but also erase their data! The message warns: “if you have crucial data, we advise you to make a backup before it becomes permanently inaccessible”. Thanks, we wouldn’t have thought of that.

Today Russia, tomorrow France?

Because we are not talking about a suspension of the customer account, but a deletion of data. No deadline either announced in the concise message. A possible refund is not mentioned either. We understand the logic ” piss off the people as much as possible so that they turn against their leader “, but this is clearly a shameful measure in addition to being almost useless. Some will no doubt welcome this situation, but it sets an unprecedented precedent. In France, individuals often use American or more generally foreign clouds or online services. What would happen if we were to get angry with China or the USA? Did you know that AXA and Air France are MongoDB customers? And what about French institutions that trust Microsoft or other foreign companies for their software, their online services rather than favoring sovereign solutions?

MongoDB’s “coup de bitch” should make us reflect on our relationship with “cloud” solutions hosted outside France and more generally on our digital sovereignty.
