Hackers Steal Hundreds of Millions on Ethereum

It’s hit again. Hackers have managed to hack into a large amount of wrapped Ethereum via the Wormhole protocol.

It is still regularly in the news that cryptocurrency exchanges have fallen victim to a hack. This time too, unfortunately, it is hit. Crypto platform Wormhole has been hacked for the equivalent of 282 million euros. This concerns a hack of a total of 120,000 wETH. This abbreviation stands for wrapped Ethereum. The platform has confirmed the info on Twitter.

The Ethereum was hijacked from the Solana blockchain. Of that 120,000 wETH, 93,750 ETH went to the Ethereum blockchain. Following the hack, the platform also went offline for some time for maintenance.

Ultimately, the hack had no impact on Wormhole customers. All funds have been refunded and the services are back online to use. It is more common that crypto exchanges are hijacked and that the service itself bears the consequences. This way, customers hardly notice it. Ultimately, security will have to improve.

In your own case, having a hardware wallet is always the best way to keep your cryptos safe. This way you are not dependent on other parties and others cannot steal this from you online.
