Hackers flood Microsoft Edge with illegal copies of famous games
Are you a fan of vintage games like Pac-Man, Tetris, Super Mario Bros, Sonic Hedgehop 2, Cut The Rope and others? This information should be of interest to you. The Verge has actually just reported that illegal copies of several vintage and iconic games, including Minecraft, are currently in Microsoft Store’s Edge extensions. Those who claim to be the developers of these games are not Microsoft, Nintendo or any other notorious developer.
Unknown developers, duplicate games and similar game descriptions
The Verge has listed 10 names of different “developers” including “GamePro Inc”, “Gamelands”, “StayReal” or “Kday” and several games even seemed to be duplicated. Also, although there were several different developers, the descriptions of the games were similar, which suggests that these copies of games are from the same source. Microsoft itself seems to have fallen into the trap as it promoted browser extensions in a tweet posted by its Microsoft Edge Dev account which has already been deleted.
Twitter user Jordan Chase installed the Mario Kart 64 expansion and found that the expansion downloaded a game ROM, a procedure Nintendo would never tolerate as it cracked down on sites hosting ROMs and pirated content. which allow Internet users to download free copies of its most famous games.
Games that have been part of the Microsoft Edge catalog since October
Chase also confides having downloaded Tetris whose extension, he specifies, did not download any ROM this time. He also installed the Pac-Man extension which appears to use direct resources from the original game.
Oddly enough, most of the games have been in Microsoft’s catalog since October, and one wonders how Microsoft has not identified them before. Regardless, Microsoft and Nintendo claim to be working together to resolve this situation and we strongly advise against downloading these illegal games to your machine.
