Grindr must protect users during the Olympics

During the Olympics, men on Grindr will only see a limited selection for their own safety.

Fortunately, today there is a dating app for anyone looking for a partner. But depending on where you are in the world, it might not be a good idea for everyone to know exactly which dating app you’re using. Such is the case for Grindr during the Olympics. After all, the app that gay men usually use is a no-go in China.

No Grindr during the Olympics

In China, where the Olympics are underway at the time of writing, people have a lot less freedom when it comes to sexuality. That’s why Grindr has decided to shield the profiles of ‘queer’ users from the outside world, Bloomberg writes.

Only people in the Olympic village can meet each other in the application. Anyone out there won’t see any users who are there. This is to ensure the safety of non-heterosexual athletes, coaches and other sports-related visitors in Beijing.

We want Grindr to be a place where queer athletes, no matter where they come from, feel safe enough to connect with another user in the Olympic Village.

Although homosexuality has not been technically illegal in China since the 1990s, the application could be misused by malicious people. Now the question is whether using Grindr during the Olympics is the right priority. But hey, sometimes you just feel like a good conversation, right?
