Google’s smart writing assistant will soon help you type emails in Gmail
The generative AI tool to help you write and respond to emails is becoming available on more and more Android smartphones. The rollout of the feature in the Gmail mobile app seems to have started in a big way.
Help me write
During Google I/O 2023, Google announced that a writing assistant is coming to Gmail. The “Help me write” feature is an AI tool that helps you compose messages and emails. Help me write can, among other things, convert your notes or other feedback into an e-mail. If you respond to another e-mail, it can also recognize the names and other data and use them immediately.
Help me write can also see what kind of message you’re typing, such as a business cover letter. The smart writing assistant recognizes this and will adjust its recommendations and output accordingly. You can further adjust the text in an e-mail via the buttons Formalize, elaborate, shorten, ‘I’m feeling lucky’ and ‘Write a draft’. You can see an example of how it works in the video below.
Rollout to Android smartphones
It was previously announced that the AI tool will also come to Google Docs in addition to Gmail. Mobile apps are also coming up. 9to5Google is now reporting that the feature is being widely rolled out to those who have enrolled in the Workspace Labs program. They also indicate that they have already received the update for the Gmail Android and iOS app.
If you start writing an email in the Gmail app, you will see the button at the bottom right Help me write. Here you can enter a prompt. This is a small piece of text in which you give the AI a command. Examples of prompts can be found in this article.

Once you have entered this, the AI tool will get to work for you. It creates a message based on your specified command, which you can edit and refine afterwards. If you are satisfied, you can have the message sent. You can see more in the images below. The broad roll-out has therefore started, although we would have to be patient in the Netherlands and Belgium.
