Google’s real, proprietary Tensor 5 chip won’t arrive until 2025

Google has missed a deadline and therefore it will not be possible to take many steps this year in the field of a new Tensor chip. The third Tensor chip is there, and that is the newest, but the fifth would be even more from Google in terms of manufacture and due to missing the deadline not expected until 2025.

The Information writes that the idea was to use the Tensor 5 chip in 2024 to replace the custom Samsung Exynos chips. Exynos chips are currently being modified to become Tensor chips, but the idea was to put Tensor 5 on a chip all its own. Now that it has missed the deadline, it would have come up with a different pan, namely a processor codenamed Laguna. It will also be based on Samsung’s chip skills for the time being and will therefore not become Google’s own chip.

The reason that Google’s real, own chip will not come until 2025 has to do with employee retention, but also the cooperation between the teams in the United States and India. Google has canceled a lot of Tensor chips in recent times and that doesn’t sit well with the teams, sources say. So for now it will be Samsung that will do the trick, but after that Google will probably switch to TSMC, the company known for iPhone chips from Apple.

Tensor 5 is built on TSMC’s 3nm process. These chips are popular because of their energy efficiency and good performance. Samsung will then be said goodbye to chips by 2025. Where Tensor chips are now getting quite hot, there is the hope that this will not be the case with a new chip from another manufacturer. However, it costs a lot of money to switch suppliers, especially if you have also designed everything yourself on the chip.

Do you think it’s a good move for Google to switch chip suppliers? Leave it now in the comments.
