Google Play Store shows app installation progress on home screen

Viewing app installs on your home screen has been in testing phase for quite some time, but that is now coming to an end. Google has rolled out the feature, which you may know from iOS, to various devices.

Installation progress on your home screen

After you click the green button to install in the Play Store, you will see a black and white version of the app icon on your next home screen. Around it you can see a circle that indicates how far the installation of the app is. Below that is the text To download showing that the app is not yet fully installed. This new Play Store feature only works for new app installs and not for updates.

During the installation, you can tap the icon to go to the Play Store and cancel the download. If you download multiple apps at the same time, they will also appear on your home screen. As usual, the Play Store can only download one app at a time. The other apps are then ‘Pending’. The feature is especially useful for large downloads or slow internet connections.

According to other reports, the Play Store installation progress appears to have been fully rolled out on Android 11+ devices (both Pixel and non-Google phones). At the editors, the new function is not yet available on all devices, but it is on the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra with Android 12. Only the beautiful animation with the circle is not present there. The app icon will remain gray until the download and installation are complete.
