Google Pay released in the Netherlands: you can do this with it
Google has finally released its payment service Google Pay in the Netherlands. However, that does not mean that everyone can just use it. But the service will be accessible to more people.
Google Pay in the Netherlands
Google Pay is finally available in the Netherlands. The company’s payment service already came to the Netherlands in November last year, but was then only available at a few small banks in our country. This was without the intervention of the official Google Pay app. That is different now, because the Google Pay app can now also be downloaded in our country from the Google Play Store. The neighbors to the south, among others, have been able to use this service for much longer.
With Google Pay you can pay contactless in stores. For this, the smartphone must have NFC and also have Android 5.0 Lollipop or higher. Online purchases can also be paid with Google Pay, if the store supports this. These can be recognized by the button with ‘G Pay’. Google Pay users need to log in with their Google account in the app or on the website, and add their debit or credit card there.
However, this does not mean that just anyone can use Google’s payment service. The banks that now offer support in the Netherlands are ABN Amro, Adyen, Bitpanda, Bunq, Curve, iCard, Monese, N26, PayrNet, Revolut, Swan, Viva Wallet, Wise and Zen.com. Customers of these banks can now use the Google Pay app. This means that customers of the well-known banks in the Netherlands, including ING and Rabobank, cannot use the service. This is not necessarily a major disaster, because both ING and Rabobank offer contactless payment in their own app.
