Google Messages app gets new logo and new features

Google has announced that it is rolling out improvements for the Google Messages app. This is the messaging app that can be found on many Android devices and with which you can get started with texting and where there is also support for RCS, which can be seen as the successor to MMS. In any case, the new version of the application already offers a new app logo, which you will encounter on the home screen. A new logo will also be available for the Phone and Contacts app. The new logo supports Material You color themes.

A new feature that is becoming available is converting audio messages to text. This feature will be rolled out to the Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy S22 series devices. Machine learning is used for the functionality, after which conversations are automatically transcribed.

Thanks to RCS, the Google Messages app also allows you to personally respond to someone in a group conversation. Furthermore, you can now respond with an emoji to a text message from an iPhone user. Google is also adding functionality for reminders, which will help you remember important moments without having to navigate through different apps. Think of calling your mom for her birthday. When you have saved someone’s birthday or anniversary in the contacts app, the Messages app can give you a reminder when you open this app.

Another new feature in Google Messages is that you can now access YouTube videos without leaving the application. So you can directly tap and view these in a message. Google also lets you mark your (for you) important messages with a star, so that you can quickly find them later. Handy if someone sends you an address, code or the like. You can then quickly find this in the Google Messages app.

In some countries it will also be possible to chat with companies via the Google application. It is not known in which countries this will be the case. The new Pixel Watch will also receive support for the Google Messages app, where users can send their messages via the Google Assistant.

The update for the Google Messages app will be rolled out in the coming weeks. It may take a while for every user to see it again.
