Google Meet will soon distract you less while walking

Google Meet seems to be getting a special mode for on the go. Folks at 9to5Google have seen in the code that there is an “on-the-go” mode in the rules. This means that you may soon be able to focus more easily on your conversation, because all kinds of distractions and fuss are removed.

Google Meet on the go

Many people like to do walking video meetings: that way you can listen and work on your health at the same time. It is often a bit more difficult when someone shows a presentation, but that is also not impossible on your phone. Although it is of course better to keep your eyes on the road and the people and vehicles around you. At the moment, Google Meet is a bit clumsy: the design of the app is not ideal for when you are on the road and that may change.

The code shows the on-the-go mode, which is still a bit mysterious at the moment. It is known that when Google Meet detects that you are walking via the motion sensors of your phone, a pop-up will appear asking whether you want to switch to the walking-friendly mode. You can also do that manually by going to the three dots.

Phone mode

When the mode is enabled, Google meets your camera and the video of the other people in the call is no longer shown. All you see are large buttons to mute yourself, switch audio (loud or to your Bluetooth earbuds, for example) and raise your hand. So it’s not really a video conference anymore, it’s more like calling through a different app than usual.

In itself, you can now also lock your phone in your pocket if you have a Google Meet, but the chance that you grab your device and still watch along is high. You can’t if you have enabled on-the-go mode.

Do you think such an option adds value to Google Meet? Leave it now in the comments.
