Google Maps stuck on dark mode for some Android Auto users

A recent update to Google Maps seems to be coming up with issues for dark mode on Android Auto. Several users report that Maps shows dark mode even during the day. Version 11.33 or newer of the app seems to be the culprit.

Navigating in the dark

Normally, Google Maps on Android Auto should automatically switch between light and dark themes depending on the time of day. Light mode should be visible during the day when the car lights are off. After sunset, the interface should switch to dark mode. Sure, users can choose the default theme manually, but lately the automatic switching isn’t working equally well for everyone. Maps is always launched in dark mode for these users.

Reports about this problem are coming in on Reddit and Google forums, among others, according to 9to5Google. According to these reports, Maps takes over the dark and light mode settings on the smartphone on Android Auto. If the phone is set to light mode, Maps will switch to light mode. But Maps doesn’t change color when the phone is set to dark mode. In addition, Maps reverts back to dark mode after each disconnection.

This is a very annoying problem because you can be distracted while driving. The adjustment from light to dark and vice versa should just work on Android Auto, and also independent of the phone’s settings. The feature should just switch automatically based on the time of day.

Update on the way

Not everyone suffers from this problem, but the number of people who do suffer from it is significant. A Google community specialist said they are aware of it. Hopefully the next stable update to Google Maps should fix the problem for everyone. There are also a number of temporary solutions. You can restore an older version (11.32 or older) of Google Maps. You can also activate the light mode on your phone during the day. You have to do that every time you pair your phone with Android Auto. We hope there will be an update for Google Maps in the Play Store in the coming days.
