Google lets you know how to check whether your Android TV is official

There are many Android TV products in this world that are completely infected with malware. A bad thing, but Google has now shown a method with which you can check whether this also applies to your Android TV. At least: especially with which you can check whether they officially carry a Google license.

There are all kinds of Android TV boxes for sale online, but the problem is that they are not that official at all. Google emphasizes that this is not the same as the Android TV OS that it releases itself. In a blog, Google writes: “We recently received inquiries about TV boxes built with the Android Open Source Project being marketed as Android TV OS devices. Some of these may also come with Google apps and the Play Store that are not licensed by Google, meaning these devices are not Play Protect certified.”

Google doesn’t stop there, explaining how to find out what you’re dealing with: “To help you confirm whether a device is built with Android TV OS and is Play Protect certified, our Android TV website provides the most up-to-date list of partners. You can also follow these steps to check if your device is Play Protect certified.” If your device is not Play Protect certified, Google cannot provide information about security. You will then have to contact the manufacturer of that device.

If you buy it from another brand, then that license is probably missing and you cannot assume that it is safe, according to Google.
