A change planned for Android 11 is now also coming to many old devices via the Play Store: Authorizations could be automatically reset.

Android manufacturer Google wants to roll out a new feature on probably billions of Android devices, which are currently only available as standard for Android 11: If an app that has general access to data is not used for a while, Android 11 resets the access settings. This should simplify the overview of the app permissions. In principle, this should also be possible for all Android devices that are still supported.

Automatic withdrawal of app authorizations ends up on devices from Android 6

This is what it says now in the Android Developers Blog: “From December 2021 we will expand this to billions more devices. This function is automatically activated on devices with Google Play services on which Android 6.0 (API level 23) or higher is installed. ”By default, this function should initially only be activated for all apps that are also at least Android 11 (API -Level 30). Developers may then have to make some changes.

To implement the function, Google has published the following schedule: “The function for automatically resetting permissions will be gradually introduced on devices operated by Google Play services that are running a version between Android 6.0 and Android 10.”

The new function will be distributed by Q1 2022

It goes on to say: “On these devices, users can now go to the page with the automatic reset settings and automatically reset them for certain apps. A few weeks after the start of the function on a device, the system begins to automatically reset the authorizations of unused apps. ”Google plans that the function will then be distributed to all devices in the first quarter of 2022.
