Google invests millions in AI start-up

Google parent company Alphabet sees its future increasingly in the field of “artificial intelligence”. The US group has therefore now invested at least 300 million US dollars in the AI ​​start-up Anthropic. Google apparently secures a stake of around ten percent.

After Microsoft recently invested another ten billion US dollars in the ChatGPT developer OpenAI, Google’s parent company Alphabet is now following suit. Because the search engine company also sees its future increasingly in the field of “artificial intelligence”.

According to reports, Google has therefore invested a mid three-digit million amount in the AI ​​start-up Anthropic. However, the exact amount is still unclear. That’s how she writes Financial Times for example from an investment of around 300 million US dollars.

The news agency Bloomberg meanwhile even assumes 400 million US dollars. However, one thing is clear: the AI ​​start-up Anthropic is significantly increasing its financial resources. Google is said to have secured a stake of around ten percent through its investment.

Will Google present a ChatGPT alternative soon?

Parent company Alphabet recently laid off 12,000 employees worldwide. This emerges from an internal memo from CEO Sundar Pichai. In the same breath, the Google boss also announced that the company intends to focus more on artificial intelligence in the future.

Because the US group has a considerable chance of integrating AI into its products. The current investment in Anthropic fits in with this. In addition, Google is currently working on at least two of its own AI projects. These include the image-to-text generator “Muse” and the music AI “Music LM”.

Artificial Intelligence: Who is Anthropic?

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by Dario Amodei, former OpenAI Vice President of Research. The company is focused on the development and deployment of an AI assistant named “Claude” based on in-house research to develop safer, controllable AI.

To further advance its research and development, Antrhopic has now decided to partner with Google to use Google cloud as its preferred provider. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said in a official statement in addition:
