Google Discover gets a prominent place in Samsung Galaxy S21 series
If you swipe to the right on the home screen on a recent Samsung smartphone, Samsung Free, part of Bixby, will appear. That is the South Korean manufacturer’s own clever help. For example, you can directly ask questions or view certain information. Free is an alternative to the Google Discover home screen, which can be seen on many other Android devices.
However, it seems that Samsung is moving away from Bixby and is also opting for the Google alternative to the upcoming Galaxy S21 series. A recently released video of the alleged S21 Plus already showed a glimpse of this. Android Police has made inquiries about this from various sources and received an affirmative answer.
Not a fan of Google Discover? The site mentions that you can still choose to show the Samsung Free screen. Of course it is also possible to choose to disable both variants. The new capability is part of OneUI 3.1, the skin from Samsung itself which is introduced with the Galaxy S21 series. Older devices will probably also receive that update, so you can also set up Google Discover.
Google more visible on Samsung devices?
Why Samsung chooses this is still the question, but it seems that a large sum of money is involved. Previously, there were rumors that Google and the manufacturer were in talks. According to rumors, people were sitting around the table to have the services of Google take a more prominent place on Samsung devices.
In addition to the smaller role of Bixby, that would also involve Google’s Play Store. That should become a lot more visible. Now Samsung is mainly focusing on the Galaxy Store, its own download store.
