Google Chrome will no longer support Windows 7 and 8.1 from February 2023
Google let it be known that its Chrome browser will no longer support Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 from February 2023. This will be a reality as soon as Chrome 110 is available.
The timing aligns with Microsoft’s decision to end support for Windows 7 Extended Security Updates and extended support for Windows 8.1. Updates will end for these versions starting January 10, 2023. Microsoft has technically already ended support for Windows 7, but has offered several years of extended support due in part to the operating system’s popularity.
What will happen with Chrome 110 from February 2023 for anyone who still has Windows 7 or Windows 8.1? Technically, it will still be possible to use the browser on these operating systems. On the other hand, they will no longer have the right to updates, whether for new features or to plug security vulnerabilities. Those who want an up-to-date browser after February 2023 will need to upgrade to Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Is there an alternative? Firefox could be an alternative. Mozilla has yet to publicly announce the end date of Windows 7 support for its browser. But you have to make up your mind anyway: the support will not be eternal.
