Good news for Beethoven fans using Apple

Apple will focus more on old-fashioned music by acquiring the partly Dutch startup Primephonic.

Let’s just say it: classical music, you don’t really fill the Top 40 with it. No, it is more for a specific target group. Whatever that target audience may be.

Primephonic

The fact that classical music is a niche market is probably one of the reasons Primephonic is discontinuing their app. This American-Dutch startup serves a unique part of the market: an app specifically for streaming classical music. You can also do that via Spotify, but Primephonic is for the connoisseur. There may not be enough of those gourmets, because Primephonic announced today that they will be discontinuing the app.

Apple buys Primephonic

Don’t worry: Primephonic will more or less go further. Apple has bought Primephonic. Not to maintain Primephonic, of course, but by integrating the functionality of the classical music app into Apple Music. It becomes, as it were, the Primephonic app – without its name – as a section in the music app. The tech giant wants to simply bring ‘the best functionality for listening to classical music’ to Apple Music.

Primephonic lives on

According to all parties involved, the acquisition is a good move. Primephonic was a step in the right direction and Apple is now going to make something beautiful out of it, according to the Cupertino company. The startup itself announces that users of the app will receive money back paid in advance and will receive a six-month subscription to Apple Music. Keep an eye on Apple Music to see how Primephonic will broaden the app.
