The new PS5 revision has a significantly smaller heatsink -apkrig

About a week ago, players in Australia and Japan were the first to notice that stores there began selling a new revision of the PlayStation 5. Although Sony did not point this out, the new model is called CFI-1102A and at first glance is no different from the original. The first tests showed that the console is approximately 300 grams lighter and has a modified screw for fixing the stand. Until now, it had to be tightened, for example, with a coin or screwdriver, but the improved screw has a plastic sleeve and can be tightened without the use of any tools. Because these are small things, we decided not to inform about the new revision, for example, until it got into the hands of our newsroom, but other discoveries are already paying attention, because the 300 gram difference is caused by a reduced heatsink in the console’s cooling system.

Youtuber Austin Evans, who has over 5 million customers, came up with the knowledge. However, the number of people watching does not automatically make anyone a relevant source of information, especially when Evans is already trying to shock in the very title of the video. Says that the new PS5 is worse, which occurs precisely by considering the sides of the smaller heatsink and measuring the temperature of the air flowing out of the console compared to what temperatures the original revision reaches. However, as the discussants point out, the measurement is not conclusive, Evans does not perform it in the same place, and the decisive factor than the temperature of the blown air is, of course, the temperature of the individual components. However, Evans does not provide this and it will be necessary to wait for experts to perform such measurements and their conclusions will be of some value. Youtuber also mentioned in his video that although he made a video of disassembling the PS5 himself, he forgot about the whole process, but obviously it’s not the only thing he doesn’t remember. He is surprised that during the new dismantling he came across new fan with curved blades that lead to the center of the entire device. In reality, however, this is not a new model, but the second variant used, which we have known since last year.

The only thing Evans and his colleague are not sure about is a possible change in the Wi-Fi module, which is also speculated about in connection with the new PS5 revision.

“There is no scenario in which this is good news. If Sony can get enough power from this smaller and lighter heatsink, it will save money, and that should be fine, “Evans said in the video. But it refers to a quick console temperature test from the introduction to the video, where the new console lost approximately 3 ° C compared to the original model. “Sony apparently decided it was okay and it wouldn’t have that effect on the console. […] In the long run, when it starts [do zařízení] Fall dust, you have fewer fans and less mass [k odvedení tepla]”Evans says.” He also claims that players may experience a drop in performance in the future, and states that it is the reduction of the copper and aluminum parts of the original heatsink that is hundred percent reason why Sony is no longer selling PS5. The only thing Evans and his colleague are not sure about is a possible change in the Wi-Fi module, which is also speculated about in connection with the new PS5 revision. Even in this case, however, it is necessary to wait for the experts who will perform the actual measurement, or for a statement from Sony, if they want to comment on the described model of the console.

However, going back to the cooling of the PlayStation 5, after all that has been said, it would seem quite illogical for Sony to consciously take a step back. As it was said after the discovery of the console and its official disassembly, the device is so large just to prevent overheating. In recent months, there has also been talk that the entire system – which matters more than heatsink size – is significantly oversized to allow for more efficient cooling if needed. Sony representatives themselves mentioned that in the future they can use a firmware update to increase the speed of the main fan, which is currently very quiet and the console is often not hear even when playing the most challenging titles.
