Gmail rolls out option to pause notifications when using computer

A new feature is being rolled out for the Gmail mail service. It becomes possible to mute Gmail notifications on the smartphone, when using the computer.

Pause notifications from Gmail

With the notifications on your smartphone you are aware of everything. Many applications can flood your phone with notifications. Gmail is also an application that can send you notifications when a new email arrives. But maybe those notifications are a bit redundant if you’re already behind the computer. Google has now come up with something for that.

Google is rolling out a feature in Gmail that allows you to mute or pause Gmail’s mobile notifications. This happens when you use Gmail on your computer. The feature is being rolled out broadly to all users. When enabled, you must allow Gmail to monitor device usage. Google does not yet have a specific setting for this, but offers itself via the notification that you see on the desktop. An option for this may appear at a later date.

With the feature enabled, where you can also adjust the settings at Settings > security & privacy > site settings > additional permissions, notifications of new mails will not appear on your smartphone, if you use Gmail on your computer. You will then see a notification on your desktop.

To pause Gmail mobile notifications while you’re active on this device, allow your browser to detect whether you’re active or away. Click Continue and then Allow if prompted by your browser.
