Gifts for your children: ‘My motto is: better spoiled than neglected’

A great outing, beautiful clothing or an extra gift for in the shoe. These mothers don’t lose any sleep over it. Just because it’s so much fun or because their kids don’t stay small for long.

Stephanie (42): “Buying Sinterklaas presents for son Max (8) and daughter Fien (11) always gets out of hand here. I start with three presents and a chocolate letter. Not anymore, I suppose. But when I go shopping I quickly think: this is also nice. And this too. Then I secretly spend a lot of money again. And the stupid thing is: I don’t have to do it at all for the children, for them the first gift they unwrap is usually the best. But I just really enjoy it myself.”

Ann (44): “My motto is: better spoiled than neglected. That does not mean that my children can and get everything, but that I realize that they are only small for such a short time and I can only make them happy for a short period of time. Of course not with exaggerated things, but with something they really like: a concert, an outing, nice clothes.

“If the eldest goes shopping and comes across something nice, she can send me a tag”

That works for my girls. They always politely ask if they can have another sweet or, if we are out for dinner, a drink for the second time. When the eldest, Sarah (12), goes shopping and comes across something nice, she can send me a tag. And yes, that happens just a little too often. Fortunately, she knows that it is a privilege and she does not take it for granted.”
