Gboard introduces split keyboard for tablets

A year ago we already saw it for foldable phones, but now tablets are finally also given the option to opt for a split keyboard for tablets.

Split keyboard

With a split keyboard you can often keep your hands just a little further apart and that’s a bit more comfortable than all the keys are the same distance from each other. With a split keyboard you can see that there is a lot of space in the middle of the keyboard, although we see that with Gboard there are two times a g and two times a v on the keyboard, one on each side. This seems to work best, because not everyone seems to hit the v and g, the middle keys, with the same finger. This was probably not done for the t due to lack of space.

Once the update is available for your tablet, you can choose the different ways in which the tablet is displayed in the settings, and one of the choices is that it contains duplicated keys. If you’re not embarrassed about that, you can also choose not to enable that option and make do with one v and one g. Furthermore, you normally do not have to switch the split keyboard on and off via the settings, because you can do this via a toolbar tile on the keyboard itself.

The screenshots in this article (thanks 9to5Google) show what it looks like on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8. It’s running version 12.9.21 of the Gboard beta (this was in February). When exactly it will come to all tablets is still unknown, but the roll-out has now started, so hopefully you can expect it soon.

Have you already seen this option for a split keyboard on your tablet? If so, let us know in the comments (and immediately tell us which tablet you have).
