Fun desk accessory with a personal pixel display
This is a nice desk accessory with which you can not only read the time, but also see your status.
The desk accessory is called Tidbyt. The makers describe the device as a ‘personal pixel display’. The looks are simply good with its walnut wood panels and its ultra pixelated display. It is 8.2 centimeters wide, 4.4 centimeters high and two centimeters deep. Which is a bit big to put on your bedside table (it is possible, by the way), but fits nicely in a bookshelf or on a larger desk. It is the first product that this company makes, and that is quite impressive.
Desk accessory shares status
The thing costs about 150 euros, but it is not really clear what it is really intended for. It’s a clock, but not an alarm clock. It’s a hilariously bad digital photo frame. It doesn’t do anything your phone can’t, and your phone definitely does all those things better. It’s an excellent delivery system for quick bits of environmental information, but if that doesn’t mean something to you right away, you don’t need Tidbyt. The charm is the design and that it is really a must-have.
Use Tidbyt to check the weather or when your train arrives. Follow your favorite stock quotes or your sports teams. You do this by connecting your phone and linking your apps to the device.
The team behind Tidbyt started this a few years ago and launched the product on Kickstarter in March 2021. A year and a half later, all backers have received their Tidbyts and the device is generally available. However, sales have been booming: co-founder Rohan Singh tells The Verge that current stock is sold out, but “we have more units on the way in a few weeks.” Manufacturing is difficult, but Singh is confident that Tidbyt can continue to be a success.
