Image source: Dreamworks Pictures In 2019, a masterpiece swept the world of cinema: 1917. Set in 1917, during the First World War, the film follows two British soldiers who act as messengers to bring important news to the front line. The two not only have to go directly into the war, but also through it, in order to reach their goal. The film is now celebrating its free TV premiere! On May 19, 2023 you can watch the film at 8:15 p.m. on RTL II. If you can’t make it in front of the TV at the time, you can also buy or rent the film from Amazon Prime Video. In their video, our kino.de colleagues show you eight films based on real events. That’s what 1917 is about: Lance Corporal William Schofield (George McKay) and Lance Corporal Tom Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman), two soldiers in the British Army, are tasked with delivering a message to the Western Front in northern France. The army stationed there is planning an attack on the Germans, who are just retreating. However, the retreat is only a trap and is intended to lure the British army into a well-positioned army of their own. Will the two soldiers manage to get the message to Colonel Mackenzie (Benedict Cumberbatch) in time? And more importantly: will the two survive this mission, which leads through the heart of the war? “1917” – a masterpiece? A special feature of the film is noticeable right at the beginning: it is a one-cut film. This means that the film has only been edited once and the actions take place in real time. However, there are some time jumps in this film. Director Sam Mendes was also responsible for the James Bond hit “Skyfall” and thus clearly shows that “1917” is also a promising film with a star cast. The film took home three Oscars, winning Best Cinematography, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects. With its proximity to the real events of the First World War, the film is reminiscent of “Nothing New in the West”, but also shows the terrible and brutal sides of the war. If you are now curious, you should definitely not miss the film and tune in to RTL II on May 19, 2023 at 8:15 p.m.
