Simulations are big on Steam, but not all are getting the audience they deserve. The sim classic OpenTTD is still an insider tip after 19 years, and the game is even completely free.

As is well known, there is no shortage of simulations on Steam – but not all games get the attention they deserve. A A particularly interesting case is the simulator OpenTTD. The open source project has been available on the platform since 2004 and since then has built up a small but enthusiastic community.

Sim highlight in the footsteps of the Transport Tycoon

OpenTTD is a remake and expansion of the game Transport Tycoon Deluxe originally released in 1995 by developer Chris Sawyer. In the simulation, you have the task of to create a functioning network of transport routes and numerous different logistical challenges to overcome. Your goal is to transport both cargo and people on the procedurally generated maps via various transport routes, using roads, rails and airports, among others.

The extensive transport simulation gives you the opportunity to work on your logistics system alone or with friends. On Steam, the free game has one extremely positive rating with just over 8,700 votes cast. Compared to other well-known representatives of the genre, this is still a fairly small number of ratings – so many sim fans will simply not have stumbled across the game in the last 19 years. As Free game is OpenTTD for curious Steam users and friends of complex construction games, but definitely worth a look.
