‘Finn’s mother comments on everything I do’

Give them a class full of kids and these teachers are in their element. Only the mommies and daddies who get them sometimes give them a headache.

Jonas (43) is a master in group 6.

“You can never do well with some parents. If you ask them to help, they feel overwhelmed. If you don’t ask them, they’ll feel passed out. If you say their child is doing well, they think you are being easy going. If you say the child is behind, it is the master’s fault. And so on.

Finding supporters

Ellen, Finn’s mother in my class, takes the cake in that regard. She comments on everything I do and unfortunately is the admin of the parent group app. There she is constantly trying to find supporters for her criticism, I hear from other parents. Fortunately, that doesn’t work, but it does give me a pointy head every now and then. If this goes on any longer, I’ll talk to her.”

Highly intelligent

Myrthe (39) is a teacher in group 2.

“If I got a dollar for every time I hear the word ‘gifted’, I wouldn’t have to work anymore. I have group two. Group two. One puzzles better than the other, the other cuts better than the one. Some can read or write a few words. But they are toddlers.

During the previous round of coaching conversations I counted. Eleven parents asked if I was aware of their child’s giftedness. One of them calls me every time. Subtly I don’t get it explained to her that her son is really smart, but socially very weak. He is certainly not gifted. Soon I will be more clear.”

To stick

Krista (29) is a teacher in group 1/2.

“A few years ago it was often difficult for me to ‘wipe’ the parents out in the morning. No matter how many times I clapped my hands and yelled ‘let’s get started!’, the same three mothers always stuck.

One day one of them came in with a thermos. To my surprise, she started pouring tea for the other two. ‘Don’t mind us!’ they cried, and sat down on the bench in front of my class. I closed the door and asked the headmistress to send them away.”
