Figures STAR show an increase in the number of accidents involving e-bikes

In 2022, at least 578 traffic accidents will result in at least one fatality. This was still 522 in 2019. Not only the numbers with a fatality have increased in recent years. Also the number of accidents with at least one person injured. Where in 2019 there were still 18,298 victims, in 2022 there will be more than 21 thousand. It is mainly the over-50s who become involved in a traffic accident with an e-bike.

Why is the number of road accidents increasing?

The increase in the number of road accidents is mainly due to the increasing volume of traffic. ‘New’ means of transport such as the electric bicycle, speed pedelecs and fat bikes are creating a new streetscape. In addition, the design of the roads and cycle paths is not optimal. Municipalities and provinces are called upon to adapt the roads to the new streetscape with the ‘new’ means of transport.

Tips to safely hit the road with your e-bike

The speed, acceleration and coming to a stop can take some getting used to when you decide to hit the road with your (new) electric bike. Especially if you want to move quickly to work or school, the speed of your electric bicycle can be high. 25 kilometers per hour is a high speed in the city. Not only for you, but also for other road users. Below we give you tips to safely hit the road with your e-bike

  • Get to know your e-bike. First try accelerating and coming to a stop a number of times in, for example, a parking lot or industrial area.
  • Consider purchasing a helmet. In the Netherlands, wearing a helmet is not mandatory until now. Nevertheless, it is useful to purchase one. A bicycle helmet reduces the risk of brain injury.
  • Do you want to overtake cyclists? Make yourself heard through your bell.
  • Make sure you are clearly visible along the way. Reflective clothing and well-functioning bicycle lights are mandatory!
