Fietsersbond is committed to basic rights: more children to school by bicycle

Being able to cycle to school safely as a child is a basic right. Still, there are many obstacles along the way. For example, there are dangerous intersections, racing streets and roads without overview. In Eindhoven, students themselves contributed ideas about how cycling to school can be made even safer.

Last December 2, Arjen Klinkenberg, Caroline Dekker and Jaap Kamminga from the Fietsbond went to the primary school de Troubadour in Eindhoven. Together with 120 students including teachers, the safety of children walking or cycling to school was examined. On this day a neighborhood safari took place for the children to explore the area.

During this meeting, a point was discovered with all kinds of tire tracks through a grass. This while cars are prohibited at this point. The alderman – who was also present – ​​promised to do something about this.

Cycling happiness for children

Children being able to go to school by bicycle is very important. For example, cycling is good for health. One of the most important Western problems is prevented by cycling: obesity. In 2021, 15.5 percent of children between the ages of 4 and 12 will be overweight. Among the 4-12 year olds, this again meant an increase in the number of children with obesity. The percentage of children aged 12 to 15 who are overweight is 15.9 percent.

Buying a bicycle on makes

In addition to the safety around the schools, as a parent you can also do something to ensure that your child cycles safely. For example, buying a bicycle on growth is not wise. Children feel less secure on a bicycle that is too big. It is also dangerous. Your child has trouble reaching the floor when he or she tries to stop buying.
