World of Warcraft’s graphics haven’t changed much since release, but they have their own charm. But that doesn’t mean that you couldn’t get much more out of it graphically. A 3D artist is showing fans and Blizzard just how great the game could really be.

WoW - World of Warcraft

WoW: It’s getting old now

The capital of Thunder Bluff is one of many of the Horde, but distinctive and one of the oldest. It is built on a series of mountains that rise above the pastoral plains of Mulgore and are linked by suspension bridges. While the city is beautiful to look at, like many of the oldest zones in World of Warcraft, it is showing its age. 3D artist Aleksandr Timoshenko now has Thunder Bluff missed a realistic makeover.

WoW: Thunderrock could really be that pretty

Timoshenko took advantage of that Unreal Engine and Quixel’s Megascans pluginto give Thunder Bluff a realistic look. The plugin is a handy tool that gives artists access to a multitude of Ultra HD photos that can be used as textures in materials for 3D environments. This is often used by big-budget studios, but solo artists can also create great things with it, as his work impressively demonstrates.

Obviously, Timoshenko attached great importance to details, but held back a bit when it came to the colors. A direct comparison shows that while the lack of color and harsher contrast make for a somber mood, the end result is the same harmoniously with the overall picture fits. You can find more pictures of this project on his official website.
