Everything you need to know about Android 13

In California it’s time for Google I/O 2022 and there tonight Google presented everything you need to know about Android 13. We summarize it for you!

Google uses three pillars for Android 13. First of all “phone at the center”. The next pillar is “extending beyond the phone” and then the third “Better Together”. Nice marketing talk to kick off with, but what does it actually mean?

What’s new?

At first glance less than last time. In terms of look and feel, there is more personalization. For example, since last year you could adapt your phone to your style and colors. With Android 13, Google goes a step further and gives you the options to personalize the look of your Android phone. If you select a color scheme you will see that it affects the colors throughout the Android OS.

Personalization goes beyond colours, if you speak more languages, for example, you can indicate this in your preferences and you can easily switch between different languages.

Privacy and security also receive the necessary attention. For example, you can indicate that certain apps can only access certain media types. For example, your photo app cannot access your audio files. In addition, for example, you can also give an app access to one specific media file, instead of all your files at once.

The Google Wallet has also been significantly updated. After all, no one leaves the house without their phone and wallet. You can leave the latter at home because everything in it now fits in your Google Wallet. Your student card, your boarding pass, your bonus card, and even your Walt Disney World pass seems to fit in your Google Wallet. In addition, it will very soon be possible to put your COVID vaccinations and your identity cards and driving licenses in your Google Wallet. You don’t have to hand over your phone to show them, just use the NFC tag or via a QR code everyone knows who you are. The wet dream of many European governments.

Wear OS

Three times more wearables have now been sold than a year ago. So pay attention to that at Google as well. The best of Android comes to your wrist. In addition to the presentation of the new Pixelwatch, there will be an update for all Wearables that run on Wear OS that is based on Android 13. And that brings Emergency SOS to your smartwatch, for example.

Bigger screens

In terms of tablets, there are now more than 270 million active users. And there too, Android 13 comes with novelties. For example, the notifications for your tablet are wider. The taskbar is always present at the bottom of the screen, making multitasking easier, among other things. A nice new feature of the new multitasking is that, for example, you have a conversation open next to your photo app. You edit your photo in the photo app and drag and drop it in your conversation. More than 20 apps are currently being updated in the Google Play store so that they can deal with this right away.

Phone hub and chromecast

One more then. Android brings devices together as the marketing guys at Google call it. Phonehub is coming to your Android this fall. This way you can see your conversations from your phone on your Chromebook and you can copy on your phone to your tablet or laptop. Chromecast is built into Android, so you can cast your files from your phone to the television or, for example, your multimedia system in the car.
