When the school calls, eighty scenarios flash through your mind, none of them good. Marieke (48), mother of Floortje (10) and James (9) knows all about it.

“Just before half past eight the phone rang: school. James had cycled away early that morning. Next to the school are hills and a tiled wall; James thought he could drive over it. Only he flew off the hill just a little too fast and fell down with the bike on him. When I picked it up, I immediately saw that it was wrong. And indeed: in the hospital a double forearm fracture was found. He received a pin in his arm, which was removed after four weeks.

The day after the cast came off, James was able to go back to school. I get a phone call at 11 am: his arm was broken again! This time a boy had jumped on James. His arm had to be put in place and another ten weeks in a cast. Of course I am now scared to death when I see that school is calling.”
