Eufy no longer promises that images will only be stored locally

Smart home brand Eufy makes it very difficult for itself. The smart home brand was known for only storing images locally, but it has turned out that is not the case. However, instead of making sure it restores its promise, Eufy chooses to change it. So ‘local only’ is no longer an advantage of the brand.

Local only

Anker’s smart home brand has been under fire for months because its main promise is not kept and its smart home equipment is not that secure at all. It was the idea that the images from your cameras and smart doorbells were only stored locally and were therefore not sent over the internet. However, that turns out to be a joke: a security expert discovered that his images were simply sent to the cloud in full resolution including facial recognition. In fact, it was very easy to view a live stream of the images in the browser. To be clear: even if you are not the owner of the cameras.

Anyone can therefore view your camera images and that is a huge security problem. Instead of Eufy crawling in the dust, it decided to say the security expert was wrong. A special reaction, since the evidence was clearly visible in a YouTube video that immediately went viral within the tech world. Eufy has taken action, but from the looks of it, it’s only in terms of changing its marketing. It no longer claims that your images are stored safe and sound only locally. Read more on AWSmart.
