In order to avoid a fine, consumers who own a balcony power plant were previously well advised not to let their electricity meter run backwards. But that should change, at least for a limited time frame from 2024. You can find out here what exactly is behind this new regulation and what simplifications the federal government has planned for the operation of plug-in solar devices.

Electricity meters will soon be allowed to temporarily run backwards at the balcony power plant

Up to now it was simply illegal and even a punishable offense to let electricity meters run backwards. But that should change according to a new draft law from January 1, 2024 change. How Golem reportsold induction meters, also known as so-called Ferraris meters, are to be used from this date after the system has been registered for up to four months are allowed to run backwards, which is tantamount to a direct offsetting of the amount of energy fed in with the amount of energy purchased by the consumer.

The new regulation is primarily intended to relieve buyers of balcony power plants. Because if they need a new electricity meter to operate their solar cells, they now have four months to have the meter replaced. This means that they do not have to hand over the excess electricity they produce to their grid operator without any compensation. The latter may not request any notification of the installed system within the four-month period. Additional information about built-in plug-in solar device however, he may subsequently obtain it from the owner.

The permitted output of the solar modules also increases

In addition, owners of balcony power plants can look forward to further simplifications. For example, the Registration of the system with the market master data register of the Federal Network Agency, which must take place within one month, will be simplified from the beginning of January 2024. And the permitted amount of electrical power that the balcony power plants are allowed to provide should also increase. A maximum of two kilowatts are then allowed while the permitted inverter power increases from 600 to now 800 watts.

The aim of the federal government is to make the installation of balcony power plants more attractive with the new regulations. The government expects no fewer than 200,000 plug-in solar devices to be connected to the grid every year in the near future. This not only contributes to a decentralized energy supply, but also promotes the general expansion of renewable energy sources.
