Editing and retracting iMessages: here’s how

Surely you’ve sent a message in the Messages app that you regret. Since iOS 16, this is no longer necessary, because you can now edit and withdraw iMessages. We’ll show you how.

Read on after the ad.

Edit and retract iMessages

The only thing to keep in mind is that you can only edit and retract iMessage messages during a certain amount of time. Editing a message is possible up to 15 minutes after sending, you must withdraw a message within 2 minutes after sending.

This is how you can edit a message

Did you make a typo, entered the wrong date, or made a (subsequent) stupid comment? So you have 15 minutes to edit the message. That works as follows:

  1. Long press on the message you sent;
  2. Tap on ‘Edit’;
  3. Customize the message;
  4. Tap the blue ball with the check mark.

The recipient will see ‘edited’ next to your message. So he knows that something has changed, but not what. You can edit a message up to five times, after which the option will disappear. If you tap on ‘edited’ for a modified message, you will see which change you have made.

Delete completely: retract message

Revoke Edit iMessage

Don’t want to edit an iMessage message, but want to retract it? Then you can do that within 2 minutes. You do this in the following way:

  • Long press on the message you sent;
  • Tap ‘Undo Send’ heading.

Chances are, of course, that the recipient has already read your message before you retracted it. Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done about that. If the recipient only checks later, they will only see the message that a message has been deleted. If you still regret deleting it, you can restore the deleted message up to 30 days after deletion.
