E-car buyers are put to the test

Volkswagen has to disappoint e-car buyers bitterly. The largest German car manufacturer can no longer meet the high demand. Customers who still opt for an electric car now will get nothing in 2022. Audi, Skoda and Porsche are also affected.

Shock for e-car buyers: VW, Audi, Porsche and Skoda will not deliver until 2023

It is a severe blow for e-car buyers, although not entirely unexpected: VW CEO Herbert Diess has announced that the entire production for 2022 sold out is. Anyone who still decides in favor of an electric car from Wolfsburg has no chance of delivery before the turn of the year.

“Basically, we’re sold out of EVs in Europe and the United States. And things are really getting going in China,” says Diess (source: Financial Times). The order books should be properly filled: The VW Group assumes that in the current year to produce around 300,000 electric cars and deliver, alone in Western Europe.

According to the Financial Times, this is far from just about electric cars from the VW brand. Instead, this year is probably the end for all group brands. E-cars will therefore also get new buyers this year no longer from Audi, Porsche, Skoda and Cupra.

On the one hand, new customers have to be put off until next year because of the high demand. On the other hand, the automotive industry is repeatedly struggling with restrictions. In the meantime, VW had to stop production in Germany and Skoda in the Czech Republic due to a lack of supplies from the Ukraine. In China, local lockdowns repeatedly interrupt the manufacturing processes.

The environmental bonus is now hardly an argument for saving costs with the e-car:

9,000 euros deleted: VW customers have no chance with the full environmental bonus

Particularly bitter for VW customers: Even if there is no order freeze as with some other manufacturers, all buyers have to from now on calculate with less environmental bonus. It is considered certain that from 2023 less support will be paid out for pure electric cars, although it is still unclear exactly how much. The federal share could fall from 6,000 to 4,000 euros. For plug-in hybrids, the environmental bonus is even to be completely eliminated.

So the late availability will become will certainly result in a price increase. Only a few car manufacturers give a guarantee to make e-cars available in time for the full environmental bonus.
