Does Vanmoof have financial problems? E-bike manufacturer suspends sales

Everything new, everything electric: Vanmoof wanted to set new standards with the e-bikes of the future. And for pretty high prices. For example, if you were willing to put around 3500 euros on the table for the Vanmoof S5, you could do that in the past and, as our test shows, you got a lot in return. The cheaper Vanmoof S4 could be purchased for just under 2,200 euros, which also boasts a chic design and high driving comfort. But that seems to be over now.

Because: Who now on the website of the e-bike manufacturer and clicks on one of the many models, is surprised by a pop-up that says: “We have temporarily paused sales to catch up on production and delivery of existing orders.” It goes on to say: ” Don’t worry – this will not affect the service. Sign up for our newsletter to be notified when we resume sales.”

It is currently not possible to order bikes or accessories on the site. Pedelecs will probably still be delivered, but new ones can no longer be ordered. While the message in the pop-up sounds like it’s temporary, it’s also fueled speculation about the company.

If you look at the VanMoof forum Reddit around, you get a completely different picture, as various users report financial problems and delivery difficulties.

Of course, one should always keep in mind that dissatisfied customers are more likely to express their anger, while satisfied customers may not express their excitement as much – or maybe not at all. But the tenor is mostly negative. For example, some users complain about the poor processing of service orders.

In addition, there seem to be significant problems with the delivery of orders already placed. As an example, a delivery was given that was already scheduled for the end of May, was postponed by a month and is still pending.

Users who have sent in their e-bike for repair or replacement should also be affected by the delivery delays. There is also speculation about the manufacturer’s financial problems. At the end of 2022, Vanmoof is said to have narrowly avoided a massive financial collapse and barely had any money to pay bills.

An official statement from Vanmoof is still pending. In the meantime, however, there is one on Reddit allegedly internal memo emerged stating that Vanmoof is not bankrupt. “There are just too many bikes on the road for Vanmoof to be bankrupt,” the user writes.

There are probably technical reasons for the short break. In addition, they want to use the break to catch up with the orders that have already been sent. It goes on to say, “We will re-enable sales once capacity is back in line with demand.”
