‘Do you like twins? It’s damn hard work’

”I’ve always wanted twins! Twins mean double happiness. Two for the price of one… and so on. The comments we received during the pregnancy were beyond counting,” Amber begins her blog. “They all came from people without twins or people who had no children. Friends of ours who did have twins told us the reality: having twins is tough. The first year is a matter of survival.’

Amber and her now ex-partner already had a daughter. ‘She was a lot bigger when she was born, so we had to buy a lot of new clothes for the twins. Fortunately, we also got a lot from people around us, but it didn’t just stop with buying clothes. Everything had to be twice: cribs, car seats, bottles, diapers…’

Not to mention the biggest expense: a new house. ‘Because when we saw two hearts on the ultrasound, we knew: our house is too small. The twins are now eight, but there are still boxes in the basement that have not been unpacked. We have simply been too busy in recent years. Sleepless nights, double crying due to teething, double runny noses, double diarrhea…’

Worth it

As the twins get older, things get a little easier. “But it’s still two,” says Amber. ‘So double school work, conflicting sports schedules because they are on different teams, double clothing and so on. Our friends were right: having twins is hard. Exhausting. And definitely not a ‘get one and get one free’ deal. But you know? It’s definitely worth it. We are all happy. And that’s ultimately what it’s all about.’
