A surprise awaits Lidl customers: the discounter is equipping most of its 3,200 branches in Germany with a new box. It should benefit the poor. However, not every donation is welcome.

Lidl

Germany is one of the richest countries in the world. Despite this, millions of people live in poverty here. They are hit particularly hard by inflation and expensive energy prices. Lidl is now taking a step to at least alleviate the need somewhat.

Lidl sets up a donation box in most branches

The discounter is expanding its long-standing cooperation with the non-profit table. In the most of the 3,200 German Lidl branches are called from March donation boxes set up. The name says it all: after shopping, Lidl customers can donate to the needy here. The donation box is located in the exit area at the checkout (source: Lidl).

However, not every donation is welcome. Since collecting, transporting and passing on all take time, Lidl customers are called upon to only durable and unrefrigerated items to donate. Household items such as shampoo or toothpaste can also be donated. However, fresh produce is excluded from the donation such as fresh meat, frozen goods or baked goods, as well as alcohol and tobacco, prepaid and voucher cards and generally unpackaged goods.

Jochen Brühl, Chairman of Tafel Deutschland, is pleased with Lidl’s commitment: “In these challenging times, we need donations more urgently than ever” (source: press portal).
