iOS 16: Lock Screen

Although iOS 16 is currently only available as a beta, we have already found out that Apple has made quite a few changes to the lock screen. For example, you can place new widgets, change your iPhone wallpaper based on time or location and there are countless new lockscreen functions.

As icing on the cake, Apple has also tweaked the way notifications are displayed. In doing so, the company has added several options for how they should be displayed. In this article we explain how to adjust this view.

Customize your iPhone notifications in iOS 16

In iOS 16, your iPhone’s notifications now enter the screen from below, rather than from above. This makes for a more subtle notification that won’t get in the way of the new widgets you’ve set up on the lockscreen. You can swipe up from the bottom of the screen to see the notifications. Have you read them? Then swipe down and they are hidden.

You can also pinch the notification list on the lock screen to automatically change the format. It is also possible to use one of these layouts as the default for your lock screen. You do this as follows:

  1. Open the Settings app;
  2. Tap on ‘Notifications’;
  3. Press ‘Show as’;
  4. Select ‘Quantity’, ‘Stack’ or ‘List’.
