Customers facing a price shock – the successor should be significantly more expensive

What happens next with the 9-euro ticket? After the saver ticket for local and regional transport celebrated great success, the pressure on politicians to present a successor increased. The German transport companies now have a proposal ready as to how the 9-euro ticket could be replaced from September. Many Germans will not like the price at all.

It is easy to understand, valid nationwide and inexpensive: There are many reasons for the success of the 9-euro ticket. The biggest among them is undoubtedly the price. Being able to use local and regional transport throughout Germany for only 9 euros is almost unbelievably cheap. If the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) has its way, customers will have to get used to a significantly higher price for a possible successor.

VDV wants a 69-euro ticket for nationwide use of local and regional transport

As a successor to the popular 9-euro ticket, the VDV has opted for a issued a permanent 69-euro ticket (Source: daily News). That would almost 8 times as expensive like the current 9-euro ticket, which according to Federal Chancellor Scholz will definitely expire at the end of August. After all, the 69-euro ticket should also apply nationwide.

For VDV General Manager Oliver Wolff, it is clear who is to be addressed with this ticket: Drivers who are willing to pay. They have “proven to be a relevant target group in market research.” According to Wolff, the industry will be able to offer such a climate ticket from September 1st. “For this, however, we would need the corresponding order from politicians very quickly.”

Parts of the SPD are also calling for a successor to the 9-euro ticket. SPD parliamentary group leader Müller calls on the federal and state governments to agree on a permanent model. However, Müller did not give any concrete price expectations: “Whether a connecting ticket then costs 39, 49 or 69 euros is secondary.” It is more important that the price has a psychological effect and that it is for people to leave their car at home.
